Electronic Resource FAQ

General FAQ for Electronic Academic Information Services

I have a valid THERS Account, but I get an authentication error

  • Please check whether your account status is "Normal"
  • •
If the "Account Operation Status" shown in THERS Account authentication dialog is anything other than "normal," you will not be able to access the library's electronic resources.
In this case, please contact Organization Account (THERS Account) Help Center including the displayed information, to ask how to resolve it.
Note that the authentication criteria appear to differ by service within the university.

Can I access electronic resources directly after authenticating with my THERS Account on the Nagoya University Portal?

  • No, you cannot use
  • •
To use electronic resources, you need to separately connect to OpenAthens (the authentication system dedicated to electronic resources) and perform THERS Account authentication again.

Is THERS Account authentication required every time I use an electronic resource?

  • Generally, once you have authenticated, re-authentication is not required for a certain period of time, until you close the browser
  • •
Please note that, for security purposes, this service should in principle be used on a personal device. THERS Account authentication on devices used by an unspecified number of people is prohibited under the Nagoya University Information Security Guidelines.

I cannot connect to database, e-journal, or e-book websites

I am asked for a user ID and password when accessing full text

  • Cause 1: The system is under maintenance, or a connection failure has occurred
  • •
Access may not be possible during system maintenance.

    * Please check the maintenance information. → Maintenance / System Issues

  • •
For issues currently being handled as connection failures, please wait a while until they are resolved.

    * You can find details on "Maintenance / System Issues" by following the link above.

  • Cause 3: You are accessing from an on-campus computer, but the connection is going through a proxy server, etc.
  • •
Even if you believe you are accessing from an on-campus computer, the web server may treat the access as coming from a different location.
The most common example of this occurs when the PC you are using is configured to go through an off-campus proxy server. Please also be aware that a similar phenomenon can occur if a VPN service or proxy-based web browsing software is used.

    * Please check whether the settings are appropriate.

  • Cause 4: A problem with the browser environment
  • •
Access may become impossible due to changes in the connection destination or authentication system in relation to your web browser environment.

    * Please try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or using private browsing mode.

I cannot access a database, and a message such as "The database '**' is not available. All licenses for database '**' are currently in use. Please try again later." or "The maximum number of concurrent sessions has been reached." is displayed

  • Cause: The limit on concurrent users has been exceeded
  • •
Some e-journals, databases, and e-books have limits on the number of concurrent users. Once the number of concurrent users on campus reaches the limit, subsequent users will see an error message.

    * Please wait a while and try connecting again.

  • •
When you finish using these resources, be sure to click the "LOGOUT," "LOG OFF," or similar button to end your session.
Please note that if you use your browser's Back button to exit or close the window without logging out, your session may remain active, preventing other users from accessing the resources for a certain period of time.

Why is full text available for some articles but not for others in the same e-journal?

  • Cause: You are trying to access a journal or volume/issue that is not covered by the library's subscription
  • •
For some e-journals, online access is limited to the volumes and issues covered by the library's print subscription, even though the journal title is available online.
  • •
Journals provided through sites such as JSTOR that offer back issues do not include the most recent issues.
  • •
For some journals, back issues may not be available online.
  • •
For some e-journals, you can access the abstract for free even if the journal is not covered by the library's subscription.
  • •
For journals provided through aggregator services such as EBSCOhost, the most recent issues may not be available for a certain period of time, unlike journals provided directly by publishers.

    * Please check the available years and other details in the Electronic Journals and E-Books Title Search.
If you see a notice such as "Most recent year unavailable" or "Embargo: 6 months," the most recent issues published within the specified period are not available.

Full text that was previously available in an e-journal is no longer available

  • Possible causes:
  • •
The library's subscription to the e-journal has ended.
  • •
    The print subscription was cancelled.
  • •
The journal is no longer available for free.
  • •
    The trial period has ended.
  • •
For journals available through multiple aggregators, the available volumes and issues may differ between aggregators.

    * Please check the available years and other details in the Electronic Journals and E-Books Title Search.
If you see a notice such as "Most recent year unavailable" or "Embargo: 6 months," the most recent issues published within the specified period are not available.

  • •
The resource is currently under maintenance.

    * Please check the maintenance information. → Details

  • •
The print edition's vendor or the journal's URL has changed.
  • •
There may be another access problem.

    * Please contact us through the Contact Us form by selecting "Electronic Journals" and providing the relevant information. → Details

Can I use databases, e-journals, and e-books from home?
