An application is required to use the following materials. Please refer to the following for application and use.

1. Rare / Semi-rare books

Rare books and Semi-rare books are displayed as "Cent Lib Rare" or "Cent Lib Semi-Rare" in the OPAC.

Application in advance is required to read rare books and semi-rare books. You cannot borrow.

Regarding use, it is based on the Nagoya University Library Rare Books / Semi-Rare Books Handling Standards (JP).

  • Reading
    1. Please apply via Reading the Rare-book application (JP) at least 3 days before the date of use (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays).

      ※You can also obtain and submit the application form at the circulation desk (2F).
    2. Reception at the circulation desk is only available from 8:30 to 17:00 on weekdays. It cannot be used on the day of application.
    3. Those with microfilm, those that have been digitized and published, and those that have deteriorated, damaged, or damaged materials cannot be used.
    4. On the day of using, please read at the designated place in exchange for your student ID / staff ID / Identification. The using time is 8: 30-17: 00 on weekdays, excluding 12: 00-13: 00.
    5. After using the staff confirm the materials, and then you receive your student ID card at the circulation desk.
    6. Please follow the staff's instructions.

  • Copying
    1. If you wish to make a copy, please submit a special use application (JP) in advance. In the case that you do not know the part you want to copy clearly until after browsing, please contact us and apply in advance.
    2. Copying permission cannot be issued immediately, so please consult and apply as soon as possible.
    3. Copy machines are not allowed.
    4. As a general rule, we will hand over the duplicates created after digitizing the images by a professional contractor. Please donate the digitized materials to the library. Applicants are responsible for all expenses required to obtain it.
    5. If the replication range is limited, you may be allowed to shoot with your own digital camera. There is no need to bear expenses in that case.
    6. Please let us know your preferred copying method in advance when you apply.

  • Reprinting, Publishing, Broadcasting
    1. If you intend to use the illustration of the materials (excluding the digitized images of the materials held by the library published on the Internet) in publications and TV programs, please submit a special use application (JP) in advance.

    2. The image data of the materials held by the Library published on the Internet are provided under the conditions of "Creative Commons Attribution-Inheritance 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) International License", as long as the provision conditions are observed, special application is not required. If you wish to use it outside the conditions, please submit a special use application in advance and obtain permission.
    3. If you are permitted to use it specially, please send us a copy of the deliverable.
    4. Even if the image data is published in academic books, etc. by CC BY-SA, please provide the deliverables to the ribrary (this is not obligatory).

  • Lending of Rare books (Displaying at Exhibitions, etc.)
    1. Check the title, author name, call number, material ID, etc. of the material that you want to use, and submit the loan and exhibition permission application along with the document that describes the outline of the exhibition plan.

    2. It takes some time tobe decided whether to lend, so please apply as soon as possible.
    3. Please be sure to bring a "Borrowing certificate" (JP) with necessary information on the day.

2. Resources in special formats, 5F Closed Stack

Resources in special formats and 5F Closed Stack are displayed as "Cent Lib Special" or "Cent Lib 5F Closed Stack" in the OPAC.

Both are located in the closed stacks and will be delivered by staff at the circulation desk upon application for use.


  • Procedure
    1. Please fill out the "Request to use Central Library closed stack resources" or come to the circulation desk (2F).
      (* Applications at the desk are only available from 8:30 to 17:00 on weekdays)
    2. We will contact you when it becomes available. Please pick it up at the circulation desk within 10 days from the date of contact.
      If you apply at the desk, please wait until the materials are ready.
    3. Materials that can be checked out are borrowed with a student ID card, Staff ID, or library card.
      * Some materials that cannot be checked out. They should be used inside the library and returned the circulation desk on thesameday.
  • Service hours

3. Materials in laboratory

Materials whose staute is "in laboratory" in OPAC have placed in each laboratory.
If you wish to use it, please apply via "Request to use Central Library closed stack resources" or at the circulation desk.
If the material is in use in the laboratory at the time of application, you may not be allowed to use it.


  • Procedure
    1. After confirming that the same books are not in the library except the materials that status "in laboratory" on OPAC, apply using the "web form" or at the circulation desk (2F). (* Application at the desk is accepted only on weekdays from 8:30 to 17:00)
    2. If it is not available, we will contact you when it becomes known, and if it is available, we will contact you when it is ready. Please note that it will take a few days from the application to contact you.
    3. If you contact us, please come to the circulation desk as soon as possible.
      Materials that can be checked out can be borrowed with a student ID, staff ID or library user ID.
      * The loan period is two weeks from the date of borrowing from the laboratory, not from the day you check it out at the circulation desk. The loan cannot be renewed.
  • Service hours

4. Doctoral theses

Doctoral dissertations awarded at Nagoya University in paper form are located in the closed stacks, and will be delivered by staff at the circulation desk upon application for use. You cannot borrow.
In principle, theses awarded after April 2013 are available in the Nagoya Repository (some are not yet available).


  • Procedure [Thesis awarded by March 2013]
    1. Use Nagoya University Doctoral Dissertation Catalog (new system) (JP) or OPAC to search and identify the articles to be viewed (information required for application: call number, report number).
    2. Fill out the "Reading the Doctoral theses application form" at the circulation desk on the 2nd floor.
    3. Wait a moment while staff preparing it.
    4. Receive the Doctoral theses in exchange for your ID card, read it at the designated reading seat.
    5. Please return to the circulation desk by 17:00 on the day.
    [Thesis awarded after April 2013]
    As a general rule, dissertations awarded after April 2013 are available in the Nagoya Repository. Main papers not included in the NAGOYA Repository can be viewed on the exclusive device(PC) of the Central Library. Please apply at the ILL/Reference desk (2F).

5. Microform Resources

  • Procedure
    1. After confirming that "Location" of the materials are displayed "Cent Lib Micro" on OPAC, apply at the ILL/Reference desk (2F)
    2. Use a reader printer to view and print. If you want to print it, please fill out the "Application Form of Copy Service".
    3. Return the materials to the ILL/Reference desk. If you print it, please pay the fee by 16:45.
  • Service hours
    8:30 to 17:00 on weekdays
    * Printing is available from 8:30 to 16:45. (Please complete your payment in time).

6. Takagi Family Documents

The Takagi family document is available for reading for academic research and research purposes. If you wish to browse, please apply for browsing in advance. (Permission is required to read.)

Browsing is available every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 to 16:30.(*holidays, year-end and new year holidays, library closed days, and library adjustment days are not allowed.)
